STEMDance! Thus far, students have taken on the roles of a production team in preparation for their culminating event. As authentic learners of STEMDance, students have begun to apply math, science and dance skills to manage the planning and implementation of their STEMDance production. I am looking for consistency, cooperation, teamwork, creative input, problem-solving and commitment to this project. Thus far, the following products and roles have been drafted and identified: Theme, budget, music selection, choreography, lighting design, photography/videography, STEMDance audience participation component, surveys (pre and post).
Students have observed a live dance production to identify elements of choreography and dance production and have researched math in the real world at the Museum of Science and Industry. They also have horeographed their own STEMDance routine that includes the following composition techniques: repetition, variation, symmetry/asymmetry (math), contrast, canon, accumulation, improvisation. They also include math and science concepts such as fractions, measurement, force & motion and geometry (angles & lines), and revolution/rotations.. The dance is still being polished and in its refinement phase.
